Center for Entrepreneurship becomes Founding Member of Prestigious Honor Society

HIGH POINT, N.C., March 7, 2012 – The Center for Entrepreneurship at High Point University recently received a prestigious honor by becoming a founding member of the Sigma Nu Tau Entrepreneurship Honor Society – the only national academic honor society dedicated to entrepreneurship.

HPU is one of only a handful of universities in the country to become a chartered member of Sigma Nu Tau. In March, 11 HPU students will be officially inducted into the honor society during a ceremony, along with Gary Simon, an HPU alumnus and local entrepreneur who owns Simon Jewelers.

Through the honor society, students will have the opportunity to attend conferences and conventions, and they will be held to a high standard of academic and ethical excellence. For example, each member will complete a business-oriented service project.

“Sigma Nu Tau honors our students who are successful in all academic endeavors including their entrepreneurial studies, but the honor society goes beyond academic achievement,” says Lou Anne Flanders-Stec, assistant professor of business administration and director of the center. “It’s about the ethical and moral practices of business as well. So our students are learning values along with their business studies.”

The Center for Entrepreneurship is a collaborative effort where students can get advice on business plans, share business ideas and interact with each other in the spirit of entrepreneurship. It’s an interdisciplinary initiative because while business and entrepreneurship majors do utilize it, students in other studies benefit from it as well. It provides a link from the classroom to the industry. It also sponsors the annual Business Plan Competition each spring where students with the best plans are awarded start-up funds.

“We’re one of very few universities in the country to have this designation, so that also shows the strength of the business and entrepreneurship programs at HPU,” Flanders-Stec adds.

At High Point University, every student receives an extraordinary education in an inspiring environment with caring people.℠ HPU, located in the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina, is a liberal arts institution with over 4,200 undergraduate and graduate students at campuses in High Point and Winston-Salem. It is ranked by US News and World Report at No. 3 among Regional Colleges in the South. Parade Magazine lists HPU in the top 25 private schools in the nation. HPU was selected in the 2010-2011 list of “Colleges of Distinction,” as well as one of the top green schools in the country by the Sierra Club. The university offers 44 undergraduate majors, 40 undergraduate minors and 10 graduate degree programs. It is a member of the NCAA, Division I and the Big South Conference.
