Faculty Member Presents at International and National Psychology Conferences

HIGH POINT, N.C., Sept. 11, 2012 – Dr. Sadie Leder, assistant professor of psychology at High Point University and associate director of the HPU Poll, presented at the American Psychological Association conference (APA) and the International Association for Relationship Researcher’s conference (IARR) this summer.

In August, Leder attended the APA conference, where she gave a talk geared toward individuals interested in honing their teaching skills and focused on effective classroom strategies. Leder was asked by the Society for the Teaching of Psychology (APA-division 2) to give this talk after receiving the nationally awarded Wilbert J. McKeachie Teaching Excellence Award.

In July, she organized and chaired a symposium for the IARR conference. Leder’s talk focused on the psychological dynamics involved in partner selection and included empirical work conduced at HPU. The symposium also included presentations from faculty colleagues at Loyola Marymount University, the University at Buffalo and the University of Manitoba. Each presenter’s work examined humans’ competing drives for connection and protection during different stages of romantic relationships.

HPU senior, John Purcell attended the conference with Leder. Purcell presented a poster on risk regulation research conducted in collaboration with Leder in the spring as part of an independent study project.

“I am always delighted to give back to the psychological community through presentations at conferences,” says Leder. “It is a great opportunity to demonstrate to others the high level of scholarly work being conducted at HPU.”
