HIGH POINT, N.C., Sept. 5, 2012 – The first doctoral program at HPU, focused on educational leadership, is underway with 24 people in the inaugural cohort group.
In a time when public schools are facing many difficult challenges as they prepare the next generation for life in the 21st Century, this program prepares leaders to provide creative solutions for positive outcomes. The new doctoral program at HPU focuses on solving problems of practice and recognizes the power of leaders at every level of schooling.
The new program began on Aug. 11 with orientation and the first day of classes on Aug. 24. Among the group are local educators, counselors, principals and assistant principals. By providing a doctoral program at HPU, the local school system and businesses benefit tremendously.
“I enrolled at HPU because I want to be an example to my students that education never ends,” said Jamie King, principal at Greensboro Middle College. “We preach that we all should be lifelong learners, but our students never see that in practice.”
“After attending HPU for undergrad and entering the education field, receiving other teachers from this university, knowing how prepared I was and the opportunities I was afforded, High Point University is the best place for educators,” said Gina Spencer, principal at Pickett Elementary. “Their School of Education is second to none.”
The doctoral program is a practitioner-based, professional experience that focuses on creating systems that are grounded in research, are culturally responsive and ultimately improve student learning. The 60-hour program of study reflects the visionary thinking needed for leadership in today’s 21st century educational organizations.
“Our first class of doctoral candidates consists of school administrators and teachers who have the potential to make significant contributions as school leaders across the High Point service region,” said Dr. Vernon Farrington, associate professor and doctoral program coordinator for educational leadership. “We look forward to working with them and watching them make a difference in the world!”
