Physical Therapy Professor Receives Cardon Research Grant

HIGH POINT, N.C., Sept. 11, 2012 – Dr. Alexis Wright, assistant professor of physical therapy for the School of Health Sciences at High Point University, has been selected as the recipient of the Cardon Research Grant for $6,000.

After submitting her research proposal, “Subacute Effects of Cervicothoracic Spinal Manipulation in Addition to Shoulder Manual Therapy Plus Exercise Intervention in Individuals with Subacromial Impingement Syndrome: A Randomized, Controlled Clinical Trial Pilot Study,” to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists (AAOMPT) in June, Wright was awarded the Cardon grant.

The grant will be awarded Sept. 30, with the research study beginning in October and lasting for up to two years. The purpose of Wright’s study is to compare two different treatments for patients with shoulder pain to determine which one is the superior treatment. That treatment will then become the standard practice for physical therapists to treat with the most superior treatment approach.

With opportunities for HPU faculty and student involvement, Wright will be working with collaborators at the University of Illinois at Chicago Medical Center and from East Tennessee State University. Patients will be recruited locally from a private practice, Carolina Physical Therapy Specialists, located in Kernersville, as well as from the UIC Medical Center and a private practice in Elizabethton, Tenn.

“It is a great honor to receive such a grant from the experts in the field of manual physical therapy,” says Wright. “As a young investigator, I hope this is the start of many more good things to come.”

Wright’s research will add to the current body of evidence regarding the best evidence-based practice for patients with shoulder impingement syndrome.
