Pictured above: As part of HPU’s Access to Innovators Program, another way students are surrounded by mentorship opportunities, global leaders often visit campus and connect with students beginning as soon as they step on campus their freshman year. HPU’s Talent Acquisition Expert in Residence and Former VP for Talent at Chick-fil-A Dee Ann Turner recently spent time advising students during her return to campus.
Are you ready to experience HPU’s values-based learning environment?
When a student becomes part of the HPU family, the university commits to partnering with them on a journey towards success and significance. As part of that process, faculty and staff strive daily to provide students with an extraordinary education in an inspiring environment with caring people. Here are just a few of the people that new students should get to know as they make HPU an extension of their home:
1. Success Coach

Every HPU freshman is assigned a Success Coach during their first year of college. Success Coaches serve as an academic advisor, life coach, university liaison and activities coordinator. They help students register for classes as a freshman, guide the process of transitioning to college life, and connect students with clubs, intramural sports and other campus activities, as well as with other faculty and staff mentors. Students can meet with their success coaches anytime to find out what courses to take, get more involved on campus, connect with the community for acts of service, and find their “niche.”
“In the Office of Student Success, we are passionately committed to ensuring that every student has a great college experience,” says Pamela Francisco, Director of the Office of Student Success. “By welcoming students to their new home, encouraging them academically, and helping them get connected to the school and community. Student Success Coaches have the perfect opportunity to promote Life Skills and empower students for success.”
2. Career Advisor

Career development is an ongoing process. It begins when students arrive on campus as a freshman and continues throughout their time at HPU.
HPU’s Career & Professional Development Team knows this. That’s why they focus their efforts on the personal transformation, not a single destination, for each student at HPU, beginning the day they arrive on campus.
Also located in Cottrell Hall, their approach includes many resources, all anchored by the Four Year Plan: a roadmap of steps students can take in their career pursuits from freshman year through graduation. Students can begin their Four Year Plan by scheduling an appointment with a career advisor.
Through one-on-one advising sessions, a dedicated team of career advisors get to know students, help them identify interests and strengths, and offer powerful tools and resources to assist in their journey toward a fulfilling career path The result? A job or graduate school placement rate of 99% within 180 days of graduating from HPU. That’s 14 points higher than the national average!
“Our staff of career development professionals continually express the importance of our students engaging with our office early and often,” Says Doug Hall, Vice President of Career and Professional Development. “During these interactions, students are working with us from career exploration to personal brand development articulating their value to employers and graduate programs. This is our way of helping position our students to have a comparative advantage preparing them for the world as it’s going to be.”
3. Caring Professors

The role of professors at HPU goes beyond teaching in the classroom. Classes are small so that professors can get to know students. In turn, students gain so much more than knowledge. A faculty mentor – especially one in the field a student hopes to pursue after graduating – can help connect students with other industry professionals, which greatly increases job prospects and opportunities. In fact, U.S. News & World Report ranks HPU #1 for Undergraduate Teaching in Best Regional Colleges South! The intentional mentorship students receive from our accomplished and committed faculty prepares them for lifelong success.
4. Full-Time, Experienced Medical Providers

HPU has provided services for thousands of students at the campus health center. The student health center operates like a full-fledged primary care office, where, a team of nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses and other medical professionals led by a medical doctor offer medical examinations, treatment of illnesses and injuries, 24/7 virtual appointment access, annual health screenings, medical supplies, laboratory testing, medical examination and treatment of acute illnesses and injuries and more!
5. Campus Concierge

The goal of HPU’s Campus Concierge team is to improve the daily lives of students by providing a single source of knowledge for all campus and community information. Concierge keeps campus connected and informed by assisting students in scheduling airport transportation; making research appointments for the library and academic tutoring; serving as a library book drop-off location; offering restaurant and local business recommendations and reservations; distributing tickets for community enrichment events; and more. Additionally, all students receive a weekly e-mail from Concierge, which includes information about upcoming events and initiatives on campus.
HPU’s Concierge team is here to help students in every way they can. Please call them at 336-841-4636, email concierge@highpoint.edu or stop by the Concierge Desk in Slane Student Center, R.G. Wanek Center, Cottrell Hall or Panther Commons and they will be happy to assist you.
6. Campus Security
Learning is best achieved in an environment where students and faculty can thrive. That’s why safety is a top priority. It’s also why HPU has an expert team of student life, security and transportation professionals—a team dedicated to providing students an inspiring, secure learning environment. The HPU campus is also equipped with state-of-the-art technology to assist with that mission. Here are a few reasons why HPU students love their campus safety team:
Trained Security Officers and Campus Police Team — HPU’s trained team of officers and dispatchers welcome all guests to campus 24/7. The men and women of the HPU security team collectively bring more than 300 years of police, military and fire/ EMS experience to the university. The Campus Police Team works in tandem with Campus Security and the local High Point Police Department. The team is present on campus 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Shuttles — The Transportation Department provides students with a convenient, safe and secure method of transportation. Campus shuttles take students to their classes and residence halls, while others take students to local retail establishments and regional airports.
Safe Access — A key card is required for access to all academic buildings and dorms. Residence hall card access is given to students who live in the halls. 24/7 Student Life Presence — Student Life staff are on call 24 hours a day to assist with students’ needs. Cashless Campus — The Passport Card is the only form of payment accepted on campus. It frees students from having to carry cash and also allows family members to easily deposit funds into their student’s campus account.
PantherALERT— Students are automatically enrolled in PantherALERT, HPU’s emergency mass-notification program. Should an emergency situation arise, advisories are sent to the HPU family via text message, email, voice message, campus phones, campus computers, social media, the HPU website and an outdoor PA system.
