HIGH POINT, N.C., Feb. 9, 2023 – High Point University and the surrounding city of High Point were bustling with students and their families for HPU’s Spring Family Weekend from Feb. 3 to Feb. 5. HPU welcomed nearly 5,000 people to campus.
HPU families enjoyed a complimentary Panther Palooza Concert, featuring KC and the Sunshine Band, and Voyage: The Ultimate Journey Tribute Band, on Feb. 3 at the Nido and Mariana Qubein Arena and Conference Center. HPU hosts several major concerts and events in the Qubein Arena throughout the year.

HPU families enjoyed a University Update from HPU President Nido Qubein and attending a variety of events including the Dean’s List Reception, several student concerts, an Internship Panel, an HPU Men’s Basketball game and much more. Families also heard from HPU’s Executive Coach in Residence Dr. John C. Maxwell, bestselling author and world-renowned leadership expert, during a Life Skills and Leadership Session with President Qubein.

“My family and I made memories during Family Weekend that will last forever,” said Zaria Owens, a freshman from Hampton, Georgia. “I really enjoyed the fact that I could spend quality time with my family, watch an intense fun-filled basketball game and finish it off with a hilarious comedy show. My cousin even told me that after this trip he is really excited about what college has to offer.”
The event gives both HPU students and their families time to experience everything the university and city have to offer. It’s also a time for local businesses to connect with the thousands of families who visit the city for this weekend. Melody Burnett, president of Visit High Point, says HPU’s Family Weekend brings in a huge economic boost of more than $1.2 million to all areas of the city.
“High Point area lodging, restaurants and retail had direct engagement with more than 5,000 HPU visitors attending the Spring Family Weekend,” said Burnett. “The relationship that our area hospitality partners have with HPU is valued as it takes both an attractor and local amenities to generate an economic impact of $1,275,669 into our city for just this single weekend.”
“We love having students come in with their parents, especially the families we see at every big HPU event,” said Mat Greenburg, founder of High Point Bagels. “They have become a part of our family, along with their students. It also gives us a chance to meet new customers and hear how our bagels are a taste of home for so many.”
HPU also hosts a family weekend during the fall semester. You can find more information by going to the Family Weekend page.
