Name: Nicholas Desmond, Class of 2024

Hometown: East Windsor, New Jersey

Major: Accounting with a minor in sales

Post-graduation plans: Desmond will join KPMG as a first-year audit associate in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he will be working with public and private companies to plan and perform audits to obtain reasonable assurance about whether financial statements are free of material misstatement.

How HPU helped you get there:

“HPU helped me network with different accounting firms during job and career fairs on campus. At HPU’s Meet the Firms event, a job fair with accounting firms, I met with a KPMG representative who took interest in me. From there, I was able to set up an interview for my summer internship with the company. The Office of Career and Professional Development helped me prepare for situations like these by providing me with resume tips.”

Most impactful mentor at HPU:

“Professor Scott Davis, associate professor of accounting, was my most impactful mentor at HPU. He pushed me to be my best. He expects a lot from his students, but Professor Davis really cares about all of his students and wants to see them all succeed after graduation.”

Most impactful moment at HPU:

“My most impactful moment at HPU was attending the Meet the Firms event on campus because it helped me step outside of my comfort zone. I was nervous to talk to Big Four accounting firms like KPMG, but I was able to practice and gain confidence in my abilities by attending these career fairs. I feel ready to take on the challenge of working for a Big Four accounting firm, which I never thought I would be doing.”

How has HPU’s inspiring environment contributed to your success?

“I felt confident knowing that everyone at HPU wants you to succeed. Professors and fellow students want the best for you. HPU also taught me so many life skills. During my time at HPU, I developed professionalism, a hardworking attitude and teamwork skills.”

Advice for underclassmen:

“Have fun, but remember that these four years are about setting you up for your future. Don’t throw away your opportunity to be the best you can possibly be.”
