Name: Megan Hovey, Class of 2024

Hometown: Canandaigua, NY

Major: Sports Media; minor in Social Media Marketing

Post-graduation plans: Hovey is heading to work for Wasserman as their Associate Manager with the Brands division in Raleigh, North Carolina. In this role, Hovey is responsible for helping manage Great Clips’ sports and entertainment partnerships to ensure that the partner’s needs are being met and exceeded. These include, but aren’t limited to, NHL teams and various NCAA tournaments, including the Men’s and Women’s March Madness Tournaments, along with the Frozen Four Tournaments.

How HPU helped you get there: “When searching for a university, I wanted to intentionally place myself in an environment where I was challenged, supported and encouraged daily. High Point University encouraged me to be a self-starter and go after what I wanted, whether that be in leadership positions across campus or in my internship and job searches. No dream or goal of mine was ever too big to chase. I utilized the Office of Career and Professional Development prior to my internship interviews with Wasserman (which ultimately turned into this full-time job). Having Dr. Doug Hall, Vice President for Career and Professional Development, sit with me and conduct a mock interview was so helpful to me and my success. I definitely believe that my interviews wouldn’t have been as strong if it wasn’t for CPD and their help! I was  also invited to a few lunches with my team during the internship. Thanks to HPU’s fine dining opportunities on campus, I had the ability to start and maintain conversations with those who were much older than me, and I understood the importance of keeping my phone tucked away.”

Most impactful mentor at HPU: “Dr. Bobby Hayes, Chair and Professor of the Practice of Journalism, has been my most impactful mentor at HPU. He has encouraged me in all aspects of my life, and is someone I consider both a mentor and a friend. He pushed me to be a better reporter and knew my capabilities better than I knew them — which allowed me to grow in ways I never thought I could!”

Most impactful moment at HPU: “Joining HPU’s chapter of Alpha Kappa Psi, the world’s oldest and largest professional business fraternity, was my most impactful moment at HPU. I’m a firm believer in you become who you surround yourself with, and Alpha Kappa Psi allowed me to be pushed by my peers to become someone that my freshman year self would be proud to call a friend and mentor.”

What are the values and virtues HPU’s campus helped you develop that you’ll take with you after graduation? “HPU’s emphasis on having an entrepreneurial spirit encouraged me to take matters into my own hands and seek out companies that would allow me to become the person I wanted, and continue to want to be, whether that be through my internships or full-time job searches. High Point University rewards students who work hard toward their dreams, which is something that has stuck with me through my journey at HPU and is a value I’ll continue to try and uphold.”

Advice for underclassmen: “Learn that it’s okay to ask for help! You never have to go through your college experience alone. Lean on friends, family and professors to guide you and help to shape you into the person you want to become. People come from all walks of life and have different perspectives and experiences that can help you flourish.”
