Here’s a quick glimpse at one of many impressive outcomes HPU graduates achieve.
Name: Sarah Borland, Class of 2024
Hometown: Lake Bluff, Illinois
Major: Marketing and entrepreneurship with a minor in leadership
Post-graduation plans: Sarah is heading to Durham, North Carolina, to start her career as a market analyst at Neo IP. Her role includes collaborating with the internal IP team to strategically develop patent portfolios for clients. In addition to that, Sarah will also be conducting in-depth market and IP research and analysis.
How HPU helped you get there: “The professors are accommodating, giving me the education I need for my career and advice. I have felt more than comfortable talking to them outside of class about what I should do about my resume, job searching techniques and so much more.”
How you used Career & Professional Development: “I used the Office of Career & Professional Development to help tailor my resume for the jobs I wanted and to review my cover letters to be as professional as possible. In addition, they also helped me search for jobs more efficiently.“
Most impactful mentor at HPU: “It’s hard to say just one impactful mentor because so many professors helped me in different ways given that I am a double major. Depending on the project, I regularly reached out to Dr. David Bergen, professor of management and entrepreneurship; Professor Kathy Elliot, professor of the practice of entrepreneurship; Dr. Cynthia Hanson, associate professor of marketing; Dr. Miguel Sahagun, associate professor of marketing; Professor Larry Quinn, chair of the Department of Marketing and Sales.”
Most impactful moment at HPU: “My most impactful moment at HPU was last year during Honors and Scholars Day when I received an award for outstanding leadership. Hearing the speech about all the things I have accomplished made me feel proud of myself because I often underestimate the impact I’ve had on campus.”
How has HPU’s inspiring environment contributed to your success? “I am always amazed when I see all of my peers’ accomplishments. There are hundreds of clubs and societies on campus, and there are endless possibilities, which made me want to work hard too to keep up with my peers.”
What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success? “All of our classes are required to have at least one group project so it teaches you collaboration skills and ways of working with different types of people even if you don’t agree with their process.”
Advice for underclassmen: “Join clubs and get involved! I know it can be a little tiring going to class, having assignments and wanting to kick back and relax every now and then, but your streaming services and video games will always be there. You only have these four years to be a part of something bigger than yourself, so dedicating at least one hour of your time a week to a minimum of one organization is well worth your time.”
