Here’s a quick glimpse at one of many impressive outcomes HPU graduates achieve.
Name: Angelina Pierre, Class of 2024
Hometown: Lewisville, North Carolina
Major: Biology; minor in Spanish
Post-graduation plans: Angelina is heading to Wake Forest University to pursue her Master’s of Science in Biomedical Sciences.
How HPU helped you get there: “HPU provided me with various opportunities to explore my interests both in the sciences and Spanish culture. I learned to take advantage of any opportunity that continued to foster my passion for learning. From conducting research in organic chemistry to traveling to Ecuador on a Maymester and immersing myself in the Spanish language, I was able to challenge myself while expanding my professional network. All of the professors and mentors I have had encouraged me to explore my passions, and their guidance helped me to prepare for graduate school. The faculty at HPU will help you to become the best version of yourself. They will help you to find research opportunities and connect with alumni. I also found unique leadership roles within the Wanek School of Natural Sciences community and gained important skills that I’ll carry with me.”
Most impactful mentor at HPU: “Dr. Pamela Lundin in the chemistry department has been one of my most impactful mentors at HPU. I had her both as a research mentor and a professor. I worked in her lab for three years at HPU. When we weren’t talking about organic chemistry or research, we spoke about family, upcoming trips and the list goes on. Her office is always open for students and is so willing to help them with almost anything. Dr. Lundin is a compassionate and supportive person. She has always challenged me to think outside the box. I couldn’t imagine my experience without her.”
Most impactful moment at HPU: “Being accepted into the Natural Science Fellows Program was my most impactful moment because I found a community of like-minded individuals who are passionate about the sciences. I found some of my closest friends in the program, and we all supported each other. Being part of the program helped me gain research opportunities, presentation experience at conferences, mentorship and leadership roles. I couldn’t imagine my college experience without the Natural Science Fellows.”
What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success? “Having a growth mindset and building relationships are the life skills that HPU helped me to develop. I learned to embrace any challenge with the mindset of how it can make me better both personally and professionally. As the saying goes, “When one door closes, another door opens.” I have gained meaningful relationships with both my mentors and peers where they had a positive impact on me both inside and outside of the classroom. Additionally, I learned so much from them and gained a unique perspective during my academic career.”
What are the values and virtues HPU’s campus helped you develop that you’ll take with you after graduation? “Gratitude and giving back to my community. I am grateful for my college experience and wouldn’t change a single thing. While it’s so easy to compare oneself to others, it’s so important to not get lost in that because everyone’s journey is so unique. I have gained so much knowledge and mentorship that the best thing that I can do is share that with others. There are so many ways to help my community as I continue in the next chapter of my academic and professional career.”
Advice for underclassmen: “Build and maintain those relationships with faculty and peers. It’s so important to find the people who will support and challenge you. There’s so many opportunities to learn from them while also learning more about yourself.”
