Name: Dylan Pettes, Class of 2024

Hometown: Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania

Major: Criminal justice, minoring in forensic studies

Post-graduation plans: Dylan is pursuing his criminal justice career as a police officer for the High Point Police Department in North Carolina. Police Officer I is the starting rank for High Point police officers. After the Basic Law Enforcement Training is completed, Dylan will begin as a Patrol Officer.

How HPU helped you get there: “HPU, specifically the criminal justice department, helped me as they had many resources and involvements with the police department that allowed me to decide which career path I wanted to take.”

Most impactful mentor at HPU: “Dr. Alec Szalewski, interim chair and assistant professor of criminal justice, was my most impactful mentor. His teaching methods and his help advising me on my career path with the police department, as well as his guest speakers and his connections helped me meet many future co-workers.”

How you used Career & Professional Development: “I used the Office of Career and Professional Development to build and improve my resume and cover letter in a way that was best for my interviews for a law enforcement career.”

How has HPU’s inspiring environment contributed to your success? “HPU has such a large network that you can find someone in a career you’re interested in almost immediately. These connections matched with the skills taught at HPU make the perfect combination that will help with any line of work.”

What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success? “HPU helped me develop my communication and critical thinking skills. My coursework, such as presentations and discussions, helped me build communication. My involvement in multiple clubs and organizations, such as Student Justice, helped me with my critical thinking skills.”

Advice for underclassmen: “Be involved and meet as many new people as possible. Even if it is uncomfortable at times, it will be so beneficial to both you and those around you. It will create connections and a network that will be very helpful in the long run.”
