Name: Carter Kleinschmidt, Class of 2025

Hometown: Nashville, Tennessee

Major: Finance; minoring in economics

Internship plans: Carter completed an internship with Publix Supermarkets as their real estate development intern in Lakeland, Florida, this summer. He assisted Publix’s development department in meetings, phone calls, site visits, tenant meetings and other various real estate endeavors. Additionally, Carter created a database for the department to utilize breaking down multi-million dollar project budgets from a 5-year span in order to support better projections of future budgets and actual spendings for developmental projects.

How HPU helped you get there: “HPU has pushed me to step out of my comfort zone and surround myself with like-minded individuals who will push me to my greatest potential. Being a student here has transformed my outlook on life and has made me more confident in myself to strive to achieve great goals when I graduate. If it were not for coming here, I doubt I would have gained the professional experiences that I have now completed within the realm of real estate this past summer.”

Most impactful mentor at HPU: “Professor Watson, director of the Business Communications Program, was my most impactful mentor at HPU. She serves as an advisor for an organization that I am actively involved in, and she has always been a great resource for me if I ever needed anything. She has motivated me to step up in roles that challenge me and continue to push me forward in my college career.”

Most impactful moment at HPU: “I wouldn’t say there has been one specific impactful moment that has defined my HPU experience, but over the course of the last few years, I have found a great community of friends who have pushed me and have wanted me to succeed. If it were not for these individuals, I would not be where I am today. So, the most impactful moments, in my opinion, are the friends that make every moment an impactful moment every time I step on campus, making every day feel just a little more like home to me.”

What has your internship experience been like and how is it preparing you for your future? My internship at Publix gave me great hands on experience within the real estate field. I was able to get a deeper understanding into commercial development on the corporate side of things while also developing a broader professional network.”

How has HPU’s inspiring environment contributed to your success? “Being surrounded by so many people who are pushing themselves to accomplish their goals creates an inspiring environment that has helped push me to want to do better. I currently am a member of HPU’s business professional fraternity, Alpha Kappa Psi, and can say that this is a prime example of how being surrounded by motivated students has helped me with my own potential to do better and find success.”

What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success? “The ability to network well with others and so many other life skills it takes to do well in the job force. HPU has taught me how to build a sustainable network that I can keep beyond graduation. Knowing that I am completing my degree at a school that focuses so much on developing those skills has helped me to improve in those areas so that I can stand out from other students at other schools.”

Advice for underclassmen: “Don’t be afraid to take risks and network with as many people as you can, you never know who will be the one to help you land a job.”
