Dry Cleaning

High Point University offers dry cleaning services for students. Your attire is a form of communication and can influence the impression of your boss, coworkers, and customers about your capabilities and professionalism. We want our students dressed for success when they interview for internships or jobs, present in class, or attend our fine-dining learning labs on campus. To support this, we offer dry cleaning services through Campus Concierge at the Slane Student Center. Our dry cleaner picks up and returns items every Tuesday.

As a young professional stepping into the job market for the first time, you’re likely experiencing a mix of excitement and nerves. The anticipation of landing your first job can be thrilling, but it also comes with the pressure of making a strong first impression. One of the most critical factors in shaping that impression is your attire. Dressing appropriately for a job interview goes beyond just looking good; it speaks volumes about your professionalism, respect for the opportunity, and readiness to join the workforce.

Why Business Attire Matters

  1. First Impressions Are Lasting
When you walk into an interview room, your appearance is the first thing an employer notices. Within seconds, they’ve made an initial judgment about you based on your attire. Wearing proper business attire signals that you are serious about the opportunity and that you respect the company’s culture and values. It’s your chance to make a positive, lasting impression before you even say a word.
  2. Professionalism and Credibility
Dressing in business attire demonstrates professionalism. It shows that you understand the expectations of the business world and are prepared to meet them. Employers want to hire candidates who will represent their company well, and your clothing is an outward expression of your commitment to professionalism. A well-dressed candidate is often perceived as more credible and capable.
  3. Confidence Boost
When you look good, you feel good. Wearing appropriate business attire can give you a significant confidence boost during your interview. This confidence can translate into better body language, clearer communication, and a more assertive demeanor—qualities that employers find attractive in potential hires.
  4. Respect for the Opportunity
Choosing the right attire shows that you respect the opportunity and the time of those interviewing you. It indicates that you’ve put thought into your appearance and that you value the chance to present yourself in the best light. This respect can go a long way in setting you apart from other candidates who might not have taken the same level of care.

What Constitutes Proper Business Attire?

  • For Men: A well-fitted suit in a neutral color (navy, black, or gray) is a safe and professional choice. Pair it with a crisp, white or light-colored dress shirt, a tie that complements your suit, and polished dress shoes. Ensure your hair is neatly groomed, and avoid overpowering cologne or excessive accessories.
  • For Women: A tailored suit, whether a skirt or pantsuit, in a neutral color is ideal. Pair it with a blouse that isn’t too revealing, closed-toe shoes with a moderate heel, and minimal, professional accessories. Hair should be neatly styled, and makeup should be natural and understated.
  • General Tips: Avoid loud colors or patterns, as they can be distracting. Make sure your clothes are clean, wrinkle-free, and fit well. Good grooming is essential—neat nails, fresh breath, and well-maintained hair all contribute to a polished appearance.

As a young person entering the job market, dressing to impress is more than just a cliché—it’s a strategy for success. Your attire is a reflection of your professionalism, respect, and readiness to take on the responsibilities of the role you’re applying for. By investing in the right business attire and presenting yourself with confidence, you can make a powerful first impression that opens doors to your future career. Remember, in the professional world, you often have only one chance to make a first impression—make sure it’s the best one possible.
