Dr. Steven Dischiavi is an Associate Professor and core faculty member in the Department of Physical Therapy. Dr. Dischiavi is the Co-Director of the musculoskeletal course series, as well as the director of the Sports PT course at HPU. Dr. Dischiavi brings over 25 years of experience in sports medicine to his position, including 10 years with a professional sports team. Dr. Dischiavi served as team physical therapist and rehabilitation coordinator for the Florida Panthers of the National Hockey League. In addition to working in pro sports, Dr. Dischiavi began his career managing clinics as a clinic administrator for a large outpatient company, he has owned his own private practice, and spent 14 years as an adjunct physical therapy faculty member before moving full-time into academia.
Dr. Dischiavi’s unique set of credentials as a licensed physical therapist and a certified athletic trainer serve him well as the Director of Rehabilitation within the Department of Athletics at HPU. He works closely with HPU’s athletic training staff to help provide sports medicine services to the student athletes, as well as being a clinical mentor for the student athletic trainers attending HPU’s Athletic Training Program. He holds a manual therapy certification (COMT) as well as being board certified by the American Physical Therapy Association in Sports Physical Therapy (SCS).
Dr. Dischiavi completed his PhD at the University of Ulster in Northern Ireland under the direction of Dr. Chris Bleakley. His research focus is on the application of specific therapeutic exercises and their effectiveness at preventing lower extremity injuries and improving physical performance. Dr. Dischiavi lectures nationally and internationally on topics regarding the rehabilitation of the hip, pelvis, and lower extremity.
